New fees weighed for motorized scooter safety

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – As a City Council committee weighs new fees aimed at dockless scooter safety, new surveillance video shows a near miss between a scooter and a car in South Park.
Around 4 in the afternoon Tuesday, Michael Take was arriving home on Dale Street in his Tesla when he slowed for just a moment to press the button for his gate.

"When I initially turned into my driveway, I heard this really loud screeching," said Take.

The screeching can be heard on his Ring video just as a teen – about 13 years old – was riding a motorized scooter on the sidewalk without a helmet, on a collision course with Take's car.

"He was moving at a high rate of speed," said Take.

The video shows the teen trying to stop, before briefly losing control and falling off.  The teen then rides away.

"If I hadn't paused, it might have been a different story.  He could have been severely injured … hit the car and tumbled over," said Take.
